Founded in 1911, The American society Of safety Engineers (ASSE) is the oldest and largest professional safety organization. Its more than 32,000 members manage, supervise and consult on safety, health, and environmental issues in industry, insurance, government, and education. ASSE is guided by a sixteen member Board Of Directors, which consist of eight regional vice presidents; three council vice presidents; Society president, president elect,senior vice president, vice president of finance and executive director. ASSE has fourteen practice specialties, one hundred fifty one chapters, twenty eight sections, and fifty eight student sections.
The Augusta Chapter was formed in 1983. The chapter is located in the Georgia and North Florida area of region IV of the society. The chapters's geographical area includes nineteen counties in Georgia and South Carolina. There are thirteen counties in Georgia (Burke, Columbia, Emanuel, Glasscock, Hancock, Jefferson, Jenkins,
Johnson, Lincoln, McDuffie, Richmond, Warren, and Washington) and six counties in South Carolina (Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Edgefield, and McCormick)
As of December 2009, their are sixty five full Society members among one hundred and eighty five participants.
